The SMUS rowing team was up at Brentwood International Regatta
this weekend, the largest athletic event hosted by a single
high school. Crews from all over BC and the United States
competed - it was a very exciting regatta and the SMUS team
had some fantastic results.

Concerto
Concert Shows Off Soloists |

Our musicians delivered another excellent concert this week.
The Concerto Concert, which comes once every two years, includes
extremely challenging classical pieces from some of the most
respected and renowned composers. The concert is also notable
for the solo performances from some of our strongest performers.

Leadership Conference ’09 |

This past week, myself and a group of four other Grade 11
SMUS students (Kirsten Macleod, Caitlin Lastiwka-Farquharson,
Lisa Evans, Sydney Stockus), accompanied by Reverend Keven
Fletcher attended the 2009 CAIS student leadership conference
in Hamilton, Ontario. This year’s conference was held
by Hillfield Strathallan College and the theme was “The
Power of One.”

Praise for Junior Cast |

This Friday evening will be the last performance of the Grade
5 production There’s a Monster in my Closet.
Fortunately, earlier this week they did a special performance
for their fellow Junior School students and the Grade 2 class
wrote the cast some rave reviews.

SMUS Walks
for Water |

April 24, 2009
This Friday, over 80 students and staff carried pails of
water around campus to show solidarity with the millions
of people around the world who must travel long distances
for water. Walk for Water is intended to raise funds as well
as awareness about the global need for better water access.

Athletics
Week in Review |

April 20, 2009
The Junior girls had a tough exhibition match against the
Claremont Spartans last Tuesday. The Jags were short a few
players but fought hard. Goalkeeper Shelby Clark held off
numerous shots as the Spartans attacked our defensive line.
The final score was 4-0 in favour of the Spartans, but it
was a great learning experience for the team.

Showcases Cross-Campus Voices |

This week, choral students from Grades 4-12 performed at
the annual cross-campus choral concert. The Christ Church
Cathedral was filled to the ceiling with parents, faculty
and students who came for the eclectic show.

Poetry Festival Debuts |
 |
April 17, 2009
In honour of poetry month, our school will be staging a poetry
festival featuring five local poets and Claire Battershill ’04,
who recently won the CBC Literary Prize for fiction. Battershill
will read along with poets Patrick Friesen, Eve Joseph, Catherine
Greenwood, Steve Noyes and UVic professor Steven Price ’94.

Monsters
Come to Junior School |

April 17, 2009
The Grade 5 students take to the stage next week in a production
of There’s a Monster in My Closet, a musical comedy
about a sleepover gone awry, as a group of girls attempt
to capture a monster. The humourous and magical story makes
for an entertaining evening for the whole family, as do the
wonderful dramatic and vocal performances given by the hard-working
actors.

The track and field team has been training hard up at UVic’s
Centennial Stadium. Last week, the team competed in their
second meet. Some great results were had in the middle distance
races, including, a 2nd place finish by Leo Marchand in the
senior boys 1500 m. Tyler Olson finished in 3rd place in
the junior boys 1500 m and Cole Turner placed 6th in the
bantam boys 1500 m.

Debate
Goes to Extremes |

Tuesday, our highest-ranked debate teams in the Junior and
Senior divisions competed in extreme debating, battling each
other in an impromptu parliamentary debate in front of many
of their fellow students. The resolution was “there
can be no shepherds without sheep."

Speak Out With Silence |

This Wednesday, many of our students went the whole day without
saying a word. Classrooms, hallways and boarding houses were
noticeably quieter, as over 160 students stayed silent to
draw attention to human rights issues all over the world.

Junior
Students Give Rugby a Try |

April 9, 2009
Just as the 1st and 2nd XV take to the field at Senior School,
our Grade 4 and 5 boys and girls are also starting to get
into the game of rugby. This week, the young students started
their training for mini-rugby, a variation of the traditional
game that is safe for the smaller students to play.

The Senior girls soccer season kicked off with a tournament
at GW Graham Secondary in Chilliwack. In the first game against
Lord Tweedsmuir, the girls started off slow but by the second
half had hit their stride. A goal by Lisa Evans secured a
1-0 win. The next two games were hard-fought against Sardis
and Elgin Park.

student artists to show their peers what they’ve been
working on. The Senior School library was filled with multiple
forms, from sculpture to acrylic paintings to mixed-media

attend World Vision’s Youth Empowered Conference. This

Glen Van Brummelen, who spoke to students about the interplay
of music and mathematics. As part of the Scholar in Residence
programme, the Quest university professor visited classes
and gave an open lecture during lunch.
