March 16, 2009
On Tuesday, the Grade 9 girls basketball team faced PCS in
the Victoria City final. After a tightly contested regular
season encounter against PCS, the game started at a competitive
pace. By the end of the first quarter, the teams were tangled
in a 7-7 tie. In the second quarter, SMUS faced some early
foul trouble and found themselves down 20-14 at the half.
The girls fought hard in the second half to minimize the
PCS lead.

SMUS Brings
Home the Boot |

The much anticipated “Boot Game” kicked off under
clear but cold skies last Tuesday evening. As the season-opening
match between cross-town rivals SMUS and Oak Bay, the Boot
Game carries a lot of weight for the players involved and
is always an emotional affair.

Korean
Week Brings the Beats |

Last week, the Senior School campus was infused with contemporary
and traditional Korean culture, thanks to the International
Council and our Korean students. Both day and boarding students
with Korean backgrounds collaborated to raise the profile
of their culture, hosting one of the most original international
weeks to date.

Middle
School Triumphs |

March 13, 2009
The final day of the winter term proved to be one of most
exciting the Middle School has seen for some time, with both
the boys’ and girls’ Grade 8 basketball teams
playing in the final of the City Championships at SMUS. Monterey
was the opponent for both teams and based on the last few
months of league and tournament play, basketball fans knew
these final games would be exciting.

Grade 4
Students Give |

Our Grade 4 students have been preparing for Spring Break
for weeks, assembling supplies to send along with a few of
our Senior School students, who will be spending their Spring
Break working in a rural part of Kenya. The Junior School
initiative was spearheaded by students Laura Bass, Lucie
Marchessault and Nick Considine.

Beijing
Students Brighten SMUS |

March 13, 2009
This year was the first in which SMUS welcomed students from
Sino Bright School in China for a month-long exchange. Thirty-eight
students came to earn credit in drama and information
technology as part of a new partnership between SMUS Education
Extension and the Beijing school, which bases its curriculum
on that of British Columbia.

The Senior Girls basketball team travelled to Kamloops this
past week for the AA Provincial Championships. They had an
hour-long shooting practice at a local highschool before
getting ready for the tournament’s tipoff banquet.
The girls had lots of energy and were excited to be at such
a prestigious event with the top 16 girls teams from around
the province.

King of Elfland’s Daughter Debuts |

Middle School students delighted their audience with a magical
tale as The King of Elfland’s Daughter debuted
on Thursday night. The musical production showed off the
vocal and theatrical talents of our Grade 6-8 students while
telling a fantastical tale about the nature of love and magic.

War Child
Teaches Students |

Lori Johnston from War
Child Canada visited the school this week to speak about
how wars around the world impact the lives of children and
to thank SMUS students for all the fundraising work they
have done for her organization, through Keep
the Beat and other events. War Child is a non-profit
organization that works with children affected by war, including
orphans and child soldiers.

Boot Game
Kicks Off Senior Rugby |

March 6, 2009
Next Tuesday, the Senior rugby boys will battle Oak Bay in
the annual Rees Boot Game. The SMUS side has been victorious
the last two years and will be giving their all this year – one
more victory will bring them up to tie with Oak Bay at seven
wins since the tradition began.

Junior
School Students Lead Conferences |

March 6, 2009
Each class in the Junior School has organized student led
conferences during the final part of the second term.
This gives parents an opportunity to come into the school
during the school day and spend about an hour with their
children in the classroom setting.

Week in Review |

March 2, 2009
This weekend SMUS rowers raced for the first time as a Rowing
Canada Aviron (RCA) club representing St. Michaels University
School at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta. This was the first
of several regattas of the spring season for this small group
of 11 athletes, who had an extremely successful showing and
raced against crews from across the island and the mainland.
