SMUS Celebrates
Lunar New Year |

Just as the Year of the Ox began this Monday, SMUS kicked
off its first Chinese culture week. The International Council
arranged for several traditional activities to take place
on campus, and decorated the library and classrooms with
educational displays. Art students also painted Chinese watercolours
to decorate School House.

SMUS Student
Takes Chess Trophy |

January 30, 2009
Grade 7 student Jill Ding took first place at the Victoria
Chess Championship earlier this month. By winning every match
she played, Jill became the top chess player in Grades 4-7
and the first girl to win the Howard Wu trophy, which is
named for the city of Victoria’s grandmaster.

Middle
School Film Crew Gets Rolling |

As part of preparations for the launch of King of Elfland’s
Daughter, a small group of Middle School students are training
to become a professional film crew. The students are spending
their Exploratory class learning how to operate equipment,
compose shots and work as a cohesive team.

Gala is
a Spectacular Fundraiser |

The Free the Children Gala went off without a hitch as over
280 people attended to support the repair of the devastation
caused by the tsunami which hit Southeast Asia in 2004, through
the Adapt a Village campaign. Guests were greeted with upbeat
music, vivid lighting, and the chatter of dynamic conversation.

Junior
School Students Dive In |

This Monday, swim club members from Grades 3-5 went to the
Commonwealth Pool for the ISEA Swim Meet. Independent schools
from Vancouver and Victoria participated in the event, which
focused on participation and fun for all levels of swimmers.

Large Ensembles
Deliver Astounding Sounds |
 |
January 23, 2009
The SMUS campus was bursting with music this Wednesday, as
300 student musicians and vocalists performed for an appreciative
audience. The annual Large Ensembles Concert featured six
different musical groups from the Senior School as well as
the Grades 1, 2 and 3 Choir.

Scores a Special Guest |

SMUS Senior Rugby was fortunate to have another national
coach pay a visit to the school last Thursday. Following
last year’s visit by Graham Henry, coach of the New
Zealand All Blacks, this year’s visiting coach was
Marcello Loffreda, former coach of the Argentinean National
Team.

Travel to the Centre of the Universe |

The Grade 3 students continued their study of space this
week as they visited the Centre of the Universe, an educational
centre at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics.As part
of the National Research Council’s astronomy outreach
centre, the centre features interactive exhibits and
educational experiences, including a behind-the-scenes
tour of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

Return from Dominican Republic |

January 23, 2009
Over the winter break, eight students travelled to the Dominican
Republic, taking part in the annual service trip to an orphanage
which SMUS students have been volunteering at for four years.
The Senior School students brought stockings made by the
Grade 5 classes and books (courtesy of last year’s
Latin Fiesta fundraiser) to the children.

Elfland
Takes Shape at SMUS |

In March, the Middle School will be putting on its new magical
musical, the King of Elfland’s Daughter. The play,
adapted by teacher Mr. Douglas Manson-Blair from a novel
written by Lord Dunsany in 1924, tells the tale of a young
prince who wants to bring magic back to his father’s
kingdom, so he seeks to marry the princess of Elfland, where
magic still exists.

In league play Monday, the SMUS Junior girls basketball team
battled relentlessly on the defensive side. However, their
shots just would not fall and they lost a close game to Mount
Doug 26-20. Annie Pike led scorers with 6 points and Sophie
Yeates grabbed 12 rebounds.

This Sunday, SMUS students, parents and guests are invited
to attend the Free the Children Gala, a student-run fundraising
event featuring SMUS musicians. The semi-formal charity bash

Pastel
Artist’s Visit Colours SMUS |

AP Studio Art and Grade 10 Art students had the opportunity
to work with acclaimed pastel artist Nancy Slaght this week,
as the former University of Victoria instructor came to SMUS
to share her expertise on this rare medium, which uses chalk-like
soft pastels to create pieces similar to paintings.

Grade 1
Students Have a Sleepy Morning |

January 16, 2009
Grade 1 students wore their pyjamas to school one day this
week and spent the morning reading books, playing games,
drinking hot chocolate and spending time with their parents,
who were able to spend their mornings at the Junior School.
Grade 1 teacher Alison Galloway organized the event as a
special treat for her class.

Just before the holiday break, Victoria’s Castaway-Wanderers
U-19 rugby squad played in the provincial club final against
the team from Abbotsford. As many as twelve SMUS rugby players
have played with the U-19 CW team this year and were central
to its superb season of fast, skill-inspired rugby. Posting
winning margins of up to 50 points, the CW engine often fired
on all cylinders to leave its opposition stunned.

Hinton
Chair Settles Into SMUS |

Every year, the Hinton Chair position allows SMUS to bring
in an excellent teacher for one year, creating an opportunity
for new ideas, collaboration, professional development and
a fresh perspective on education. This year’s Hinton
Chair is Mr. Benson Young, who is teaching Grade 10 and Grade
11 Advanced Chemistry.

Exchange
Students Return Home |

January 9, 2009
Last month, two groups of exchange students, one from Quebec
and one from Australia, returned home after a month-long
exchange at our school. Four students came to us from Goulburn
Valley Grammar School in Shepparton, 180 kilometres north
of Melbourne, and three girls came to us from Le College
Ste. Anne de Lachine in Montreal.
