The Senior boys basketball team kicked off their season with
the Vancouver Island Classic Tournament this past weekend.
The 16-team tournament showcased some of the island talent
from A to AAA.

Recitations
Returns |
 |
November 28, 2008
This week, Senior School students performed poems, monologues,
novel excerpts and other pieces for our annual Recitations
evening. Twenty-seven students chose to partake in one of
the school’s longest-running traditions, in which students
show off their oratory skills without the aid of costumes
or props. As always, pieces varied from modern to ancient
and from humourous to serious.

Teachers
Awarded for Use of GIS |

November 28, 2008
Last week, two of our teachers received the Award
of Excellence from ESRI Canada, in recognition of their
work integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into
our school’s academic programmes. Kirsten Davel and
Cheryl Murtland believe GIS, which allows users to attach
data to a series of locations, provides an excellent opportunity
for students to interact with information in a new way.

Junior
School Swings with Strings |

November 28, 2008
Junior School has had a very musical month. The Grade 5 and
Grade 4 Strings ensembles played their first concerts of
the year, and the Senior School Swing Band visited the students
to teach them a bit about the Big Band era. John Reid and
the Senior School Swing Band, an extra-curricular ensemble
that plays swing music, ballads and light jazz, entertained
students from kindergarten to Grade 5.

Heat Up |

November 28, 2008
Both boarding and day students have been enjoying competing
to win points for their houses. While boarders have spent their
weekends playing sports such as volleyball, soccer and dodgeball,
day students have been joined them to win points through
lunch-time events, such as this Thursday’s obstacle course.

The Senior Boys Soccer team left on Sunday night for Burnaby,
as they were to compete in the BC Provincial AA championships.
After a tough tournament at the Islands, the boys were going
into the championships seeded as the third team from the
Island. They knew that the first game against Panorama would
be a challenge.

After
Juliet Wraps Up |
 |
November 21, 2008
Our student theatre society has another successful production
under their belt, as this year’s run of After
Juliet has been met with much acclaim. Students, staff and faculty
have been blown away by the play, which sees the Shakespearean-era
youth of Verona haunted by the deaths of Romeo and Juliet
and struggling to maintain a truce between their feuding
families.

Service
Thrives at SMUS |

Since September, our students and staff have been involved
in a variety of fundraising efforts for people in need. Our
Grade 7 students are focusing on service for their exploratory
programme, our Senior School students continue to use their
leadership skills to promote both service and global responsibility,
and our staff has encouraged students to do more, while setting
a fine example themselves

as representatives from almost 40 Canadian universities visited
the school.

Middle
School Shows Awareness |
 |
November 21, 2008
Our Middle School has been busy these last two weeks, spreading
the word about two important issues: diabetes and bullying.
Last week, SMUS was the only school in Victoria to mark World
Diabetes Day and this Friday, our students showed their support
for victims of bullying.

Island Championships began for the Senior girls volleyball
team on Friday afternoon with round-robin play against
St. Andrews, Shawnigan Lake and finally Brentwood College.
Although the girls easily beat St. Andrews in two, they
struggled against Shawnigan Lake, losing in three sets.

SMUS Remembers |

Last week, students, faculty, parents and alumni commemorated
Remembrance Day with music, words and prayer. At the
Senior School ceremony, we were honoured to be joined by
Second World War veteran and alumnus Captain J.B. Young ’34-‘41,
who participated in the service.

The
Brier Takes Root at SMUS |

November 14, 2008
The school newspaper The Ivy is no longer the only
student publication at SMUS, as our new literary magazine The
Brier launched this month. The Brier will be
an outlet for all the creative writing produced by SMUS,
which is considerable, judging from the number of poetry
and fiction awards garnered by students last year and the
talent contained in the annual anthology Between the
Red Walls.

Visitor Shares a Story of a School |

for Girls in Malawi, spoke to students about the challenges
girls face in pursuing education in her country and the action
she and others are taking to help more girls become self-sufficient.

School Boys Score in Soccer |

Last month, our U13 boys soccer team travelled to Toronto
to take part in the Canadian Association of Independent Schools
annual tournament. The Middle School students played strong
soccer against teams from across the country and showed off
not only their skills on the field, but their team work and
sportsmanship as well.

With the half-term break looming, the Grade 9 and 10 rugby
teams managed three wins from three games last week. First
up, the Grade 10 players travelled to Claremont for an
exhibition match. A loose and disorganized start allowed
the host Spartans an early score, but SMUS then moved smoothly
into gear.

Drama Night, which features both experienced and amateur
performers, returned this week to much applause and more

Grade 5
Students Go Underground |
 |
November 7, 2008
Our two Grade 5 classes have been learning about the history
of slavery in the Unites States as well as the Underground
Railroad, a system through which slaves escaped to Canada.
The students are studying the topic mainly through the novel
Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker, which is set in
the United States during the early 1800s.

First Notes
from Strings Ensemble |

The Grade 7/8 Strings Ensemble held its first concert this
week, performing for a packed hall of parents, staff, the
Grade 6 Strings class and former Head of School John Schaffter,
for whom the music building is named. The students amazed
the audience with their professional playing only two months
into the school year.

Annual
Fund Launches with Stars |

The Annual Fund campaign
kicked off this week as banners went up at both campuses
and a new team of parent representatives was launched. Director
of the Annual Fund Lori Adam has recruited a network of parents
who will help generate a sense of excitement among the school
community.
