The Senior Cross-Country team was at Beaver Lake last Wednesday
in the Lower Islands. This meet was the first time we raced
against the likes of Dover Bay, Brentwood, and many other
strong mid-island teams. As it turned out, all of the SMUS
runners had fantastic races and many of the results exceeded
all expectations.

All three schools celebrated Halloween today with food and
festivities. As usual, there were many elaborate and creative
costumes on students of all ages and our staff made an excellent
effort as well.

AP Environmental
Science Turns 10 |
 |
October 31, 2008
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the addition of
AP Environmental Science to our school’s extensive
Advanced Placement programme. The course was brought to the
school by Mr. Mike Jackson in 1998 and he continues to run
it, with 24 students from Grades 11 and 12 taking part this
year.

Middle
School Student Runs Fundraiser |

October 31, 2008
Last week, Grade 8 student Richard Cunningham held a silent
auction to raise money for the Victoria homeless shelter
Our Place. Amazingly, Richard planned and ran the fundraiser
on his own, raising over $150 for the organization.

The last week of field hockey began with a challenge match
against GNS, to decide which team would be the number 2 seed
in Victoria. It was the first time that SMUS had played on
the new turf at GNS and in spite of blustery conditions it
was a very even, competitive match.

Wiseman
Shares Wisdom With Students |

Our first Scholar in Residence visited the school this week
to speak to Middle and Senior students as well as parents.
New York Times best-selling author Rosalind Wiseman, whose
writing inspired the movie Mean Girls, came to speak
to students about everything from dealing with cliques to
media awareness.

Junior
School Kicks Up its Heels |

October 24, 2008
The bi-annual Barn Dance brought many families to the Junior
School last weekend to participate in one of the Parents’ Auxiliary’s
most popular events. Along with some excellent live music,
there was an array of food and a silent auction. Of course,
the main activity was dancing of all kinds, from square to
line.

Buddy Up to Read |

Our Reading Buddies programme resumed this month, with 15
Junior School students visiting the Senior campus library
for reading sessions with the older students. The programme,
which was started by Oliver Bild ’08 last year, provides
Junior School students with a fun opportunity to explore
books.

SMUS Vocalists
Soar in Opera |

October 17, 2008
A current and former SMUS student took to the stage this
week for the Pacific Opera’s production of Thaïs. Grade
11 student Andy Erasmus and alumna Kathryn Humphries ’03
both play a part in the performance, which tells the tale
of a wealthy courtesan converted to religion by a monk who
is passionately in love with her.

this week the students competed in the cross-country championships

Spring Fair is returning to the school this year, after a
long absence. The huge community celebration, which also
acts as an important fundraiser, will take place a week after
Alumni Weekend and promises to be as much fun as it has been

Soccer
Girls Take Flight |
 |
October 17, 2008
Our U15 girls soccer team recently travelled to Winnipeg
for a sixteen-team tournament. Over three days, the girls
played eight games and lost three. On the last day of the
tournament, the girls defeated their host, St. John's Ravenscourt
School, in an exciting and exhausting overtime game.

With the Thanksgiving break imminent, a combined rugby squad
managed to defeat a gritty Esquimalt side 29-0. The core
group of Grade 10 players proved too strong for their opponents
in the opening stages of the game. Mike Shaw showed
some touches that suggest he may be the answer as centre
partner to Joe Furness.

This week was Spirit Week, a chance for day and boarding
students to show off their house pride. Throughout the rest
of the week, our school councils took turns planning and

Grade 2 Students Make Peace With Dinosaur |

Rainbow, the SMUSosaurus, joined Grade 2 students this week
to help them learn about conflict resolution. The students
are working on becoming the peacemakers of the Junior School
by learning and practicing basic methods of conflict resolution.

This week, Grade 7 and 8 students learned about the Canadian
legal system as well as the consequences of online behaviour
through an interactive performance by Justice Theatre. Justice
Theatre educates students about legal issues and

Last Tuesday night, Esquimalt hosted SMUS for the first round
of Senior Girls Volleyball league play. Our first game was
against AAA Stelly’s and despite the strong passing
and consistent serving we lost in the third set 14-16. The
second match was against GNS and with a shaky start in the
first, SMUS came back in the second with a win.

Every October, we look forward to the arrival of the Tour
de Rock and Cops for Cancer. We do major fundraising on
campus before the event, including pizza and bracelet sales,

SMUS Celebrates
Its International Culture |

Our campus has been infused with culture as International
Council held its first two culture weeks of the year. Over
the next few months, the council plans to highlight many
of the cultures that are represented at SMUS and to teach
students a bit more about them, through events and informational
signs all over campus.

Our Grade 5 students were honoured this Monday at the annual
leadership assembly. The assembly began four years ago,
to both recognize the contributions made by the students
in their role as leaders at the Junior School and an opportunity
for them to contemplate the meaning and significance of

Middle School students welcomed explorer Ian Sterling last
week. Mr. Sterling, who visited the school because of our
involvement with the Canadian Geographic Society, has spent
over 30 years tracking polar bears through the Arctic and
had many stories to share with his eager audience.

finished touring his combination of rap and medieval literature
