September 22-28, 2008
This past Saturday saw the SMUS Rowing team begin their short
2008 competitive season at the annual high school Crabfest
Regatta. Newcomers to the sport may
think that this is a day of celebration of crustaceans with short red tails,
but rowers and spectators soon learn that a crab is when an oar becomes stuck
in the water.

Alumni and
Friends Tee-off |

At our third annual Alumni and Friends Golf Invitational,
a record number of staff, alumni and parents turned out
for eighteen holes followed by a delectable dinner and
silent auction. This was the first year the event took
place at the Victoria
Golf Club, which made for an exciting afternoon by the
ocean.

Harvard Model
Congress Takes a Political Turn |

When fourteen SMUS students travelled to Bangkok in August
to participate in the third annual Harvard Model Congress,
they found themselves in the midst of political tensions
when riots broke out not far from where they were staying.

Author Casts a Spell on Junior School |

Visiting author Margriet Ruurs delighted Junior School students
this week, teaching them all about how books are made and
reading from a few of her own books. Mrs. Ruurs, who’s
also a poet and teacher, began by talking with the kids about
their favourite authors.

Watches World Champions |

Five of our finest debaters visited Washington, DC recently
to see the World
Schools Debating Championships, explore the city and
visit some SMUS alumni. While in Washington, the students
heard the National Symphony, saw Romeo & Juliet and explored
as much of the city as they could.

September 15-21, 2008
The Senior soccer boys started their 2008 soccer season with
a few wins. The week began with a game away to Edward Milne
School. In a very physical match, the team held their own,
dominating the midfield for long periods of the game. Ben
Beaudoin started off the scoring with a great strike.

Student Service
Goes Global |

Last week, over 3,000 young people from all over the world
gathered in Los Angeles for the Global Call to Action Conference.
The conference marked the official launch of an international
youth movement, PeaceJam’s Global Call to Action campaign
and connected students to both Nobel laureates and other
young people working towards a better world.

Leaders Explore
the Outdoors |

Each year, our students get to explore all the activities
that Vancouver Island’s water and wilderness have to
offer. The outdoor education trips are more than opportunities
for students to dive, climb, fish, surf and kayak; they are
also a chance for the Grade 12 students to practice their
leadership skills.

This week at the Junior School, the students who participated
in the summer reading programme were recognized in a special
assembly. Thirty-eight children reached their summer
reading goals and each received a gold medal and bookmark
from Head of School Bob Snowden.

SMUS Artists
Dig Into Clay |

This Thursday, our ceramics and sculpture students took a
trip to the garden, gallery and studio of world-renowned
ceramic artists Judi Dyelle and Robin Hopper. The Grade
11 and 12 artists enjoyed a tour and learned much about
the techniques used to create individual pieces.

Rosters have been set and schedules are being finalized
after just one week back to school. All of our teams are
in full gear and ready for league play this week. Field
Hockey begins league play this Monday with a game against
Lambrick Park.

Students Venture Into
The Woods |

Two of the 25 students who participated in the two-week intensive
theatre programme at SMUS this summer share their experiences
performing in the Victoria Fringe Festival. The student production
was of Into The Woods, a musical fairy tale combining
a host of familiar characters, including Cinderella, a wicked
witch and rival princes.

Rowers Paddle
for Gold |

Before the Beijing Olympics even began, two SMUS students flew to the US to compete
for a few medals of their own and both brought home the gold. At this year’s
CanAmMex Games, Liz Fenje and Derek Stedman competed against the top rowers
from El Salvador, Mexico and the United States.

SMUS Poet
Wins avec Rime |

This summer, Grade 9 student Paige Wergeland took home a prize for poetry. Her
poem “Sous Mon Lit” (Under My Bed), which was written entirely
in French, won her the Robert Munsch Poetry Award. Paige wrote the poem as
an assignment for her Grade 8 French class last year.
