conclusion to this year’s outstanding academic successes.
After a word from Head of School Bob Snowden, the Grades
9, 10, and 11 students were recognised for their academic

year on Friday with their closing ceremonies. Director of the Middle School Xavier Abrioux gave his
final address to the students, congratulating them on their
successes before they go their separate ways for the summer

The Closing Ceremonies at the Royal Theatre made for an exceptional
end to a year of hard work and fun. School Director Nancy
Richards gave an introductory speech, quoting the students
on their favourite memories of the Junior School. Then certificates
were presented to all the students from kindergarten to Grade
4.

Junior
School Sports Day |

Friday afternoon saw beautiful clear skies for the Junior
School’s annual Sports Day. Every year, the Junior School field is dotted with young
athletes and many events running all at once. Each student
wore a green, red, blue or black bandana to represent their
team, and had fun competing in relay races, sprinting,
high jump and long jump.

Pride Alliance

This year SMUS saw the beginning of its first Pride Alliance
initiative: a student-led group for providing education to
promote awareness and acceptance of gender diversity. Although
many public schools already have a Pride club, SMUS is one
of the first independent schools to start this group.

year’s Prefect Council passes the torch to the next
generation of SMUS student leaders. A traditional mainstay
of student leadership opportunities at the school, the Prefect
Council is responsible for addressing important issues that
affect the student body.

2008 Shines in U Accepts and Scholarships |

With scholarship notifications still coming in daily, the
class of 2008 has already earned over $1.4 million, the
third year in a row that SMUS graduates have pulled in
scholarship amounts over the $1-million mark.

Readers Visit Their Favourite Authors |

Last weekend, Junior School readers hit the road to Nanaimo
to help celebrate the Island’s annual Children’s
Book Fest. After reading and voting on stories for the Red
Cedar Awards this year, the Book Fest provided an excellent
opportunity for students to meet their favourite Canadian
authors and illustrators.

This year, three poets from the Middle School were recognised
in a nation-wide poetry contest. SMUS ranked second out of
500 schools that participated in the Poetry Institute of
Canada’s Young Writers contest.

After the National Rowing Regatta took place in St. Catharines,
Ontario, Derek Stedman and Liz Fenje stayed behind to trial
for the Junior National Team. In the trials, both Derek and
Liz made their respective finals and both finished 4th in
those finals.

SMUS Rowing
Team Wins on a National Level |

Last week, four senior athletes represented SMUS at the CSSRA
Rowing Regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario. The team performed
exceptionally well, placing 18th out of the 130 schools represented
at the Regatta, which includes secondary schools from Canada,
the United States and all over the world.

Junior
School Delivers Music and Magic |

Glittering costumes, beautiful singing and comical banter
were all part of the Junior School’s latest masterpiece, the
Magic Flute. Directed by music teacher Mr. Duncan Frater,
the performances at the McPherson Playhouse Thursday afternoon
and evening dazzled the audiences.

Share their Remarkable Pasts |

Grade 9 students recently dug into their families' past to conduct historical research and three in particular were recognized for the results. The three were part of a team of five Modern Studies students who went to the Regional Heritage Fair at the Royal BC Museum, where they presented their research along with 40 other projects from the South Vancouver Island area.

The St. Michaels University School chapel is a significant
place for alumnus Andrew Sabiston ’82. Inside the chapel
hangs a tapestry made by his artist mother, Carole. That
tapestry was part of a bargain Carole made with then-Headmaster
John Schaffter when she was having trouble affording tuition.
