September 9, 2005
The opening celebrations of the 100 Year Anniversary of SMUS took place at the Senior School campus on Friday afternoon. This involved all students from K-12, all faculty and all staff. Parents were encouraged to watch their children participate in the celebrations.

The Centennial Gala Dinner was a spectacular event held at the School in celebration of its 100th birthday.

International Festival of Sport

The School hosted an international schools sports festival with boys' rugby and girls' field hockey being the featured sports. Six teams participated in each of the two sports. SMUS, Shawnigan Lake School and Oak Bay High School were the local participants and they were joined by schools from England, Scotland, New Zealand, Wales and Ireland.

Centennial Weekend

Centennial Weekend capped the Centennial year's celebrations in glorious style. The golf tournament, soccer, rugby and basketball games provided the sporting entertainment, while field-side barbeques and concessions, the International Food Fair, various displays, an outdoor concert and fireworks added to the celebrations, giving visitors memories to last a lifetime.

Other events include:

  • A lecture series featuring prominent individuals who came to the school to speak to SMUS students during the day and to parents and Alumni in the evening.
  • A "School History Project" was embarked upon during the Centennial Year by all students in the School. The Social Studies teachers worked on age appropriate topics to capture the interest and imagination of students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • A Centennial history of the School is being written by Dr. Ian Mugridge. Ian is a former University School teacher (1960-65) and has held several prominent posts, including Chair of the History Department at Simon Fraser University. He also sat on the SMUS Board from 1996 to 2002.
  • The Parents' Auxiliary will be producing a high quality Centennial Cookbook.
